After a loss there are two very different ways players react.

The first is very common.

They talk about conditions.

The wind.

A bad day.

The opponent playing the match of their life.

The second reaction is much rarer.

Stopping and asking:

“What do I need to improve?”

After his loss in Indian Wells, Taylor Fritz shared something interesting.

He didn’t only talk about the wind.

He didn’t only talk about the opponent.

He pointed to three specific areas he wants to improve.

His return.

His movement.

His ability to stay aggressive even when the ball is not ideal.

That mindset reveals something important.

In tennis the difference between players is not who loses less.

It’s who learns more from losses.

The most difficult moment for a player

After a defeat the mind looks for protection.

It’s a natural reaction.

It looks for external explanations.

The wind.

The court.

The conditions.

The umpire.

All of these may be true.

But none of them make you a better player.

The question that changes everything

Players who truly improve ask a different question.

They don’t ask:

“Why did I lose?”

They ask:

“What is still missing in my game?”

It’s a harder question.

But it’s the one that creates progress.

The difference between analysis and excuses

There is a thin line between two attitudes.

Excuses protect the ego.

Analysis builds the player.

When Fritz talks about improving:

  • his return

  • his movement

  • his aggression on difficult balls

he is doing exactly that.

He is turning a loss into information.

A lesson tennis teaches very clearly

In tennis you lose often.

Even the best players in the world lose matches every season.

Careers are not built by avoiding losses.

They are built by using them.

Every lost match contains an answer.

The problem is that many players never ask the right question.
