There is an opponent many tennis players face every day.
And almost nobody sees it.
It’s not on the other side of the net.
It has no ranking.
It doesn’t have better shots than you.
Yet it still makes you lose matches.
This opponent is called automatic thoughts.
They are the sentences that appear in your mind without you choosing them.
“Here we go again…”
“I’m going to miss this.”
“I’m not good under pressure.”
The dangerous thing about automatic thoughts is that they feel like truth.
But in reality they are simply old mental recordings.
They come from past matches.
From mistakes that hurt.
From comments someone made years ago.
And the brain rarely questions them.
It just repeats them.
And the more they are repeated, the stronger they become.
Rafael Nadal once said:
“Confidence is something you build every day.”
But when automatic thoughts take control, the opposite happens.
Confidence slowly collapses.
You start playing not to miss instead of to win the point.
Your arm tightens.
Your feet arrive slightly late.
And suddenly your tennis loses its natural flow.
The good news is that these thoughts can be trained.
The first step is making them visible.
Because as long as they stay invisible, they stay in control.
EXERCISE
After your next match, take a sheet of paper.
Write down the thoughts that appeared in your mind during difficult moments.
For example:
-
“I can’t lose this game”
-
“This player is stronger than me”
-
“I’m going to miss this shot”
Don’t correct them.
Write them exactly as they appeared.
When you see them written down something interesting happens.
You realize they are not reality.
They are simply thoughts you learned to repeat.
And what you learned…
you can also unlearn.
And that is where real mental strength begins.
At the end tennis becomes simple.
If your game is predictable, your opponent grows in confidence.
If your game constantly changes…
your opponent never finds stability.
