👉 A drill doesn’t exist to improve a stroke. It exists to shape how you stay inside it.
In tennis, drills are often treated as technical tools:
they’re used to refine mechanics, find rhythm, increase precision.
That view is incomplete.
A drill is not just a sequence of shots.
It is a mental environment in which a player learns how to exist in a certain way.
When an athlete repeats the same drill, they are not only training:
-
technique
-
coordination
-
timing
They are training something deeper and less visible:
their relationship with repetition itself.
A common belief is:
Too much repetition makes players mechanical.
In reality, what makes a player mechanical is not repetition.
It is the absence of presence within repetition.
A drill forces players to face elements that match play often hides:
-
difficulty staying focused without external stimuli
-
the urge to rush to feel engaged
-
discomfort with not changing solutions immediately
Inside a drill, the game becomes simpler.
And that simplicity removes places for the mind to hide.
Some players learn how to stay.
Others learn how to escape, even while hitting well.
Growth doesn’t happen when a drill “works.”
It happens when a player tolerates repetition without losing internal quality.
That is not a technical detail.
It is a long-term performance skill.
Open question:
When you use a drill, are you only training the stroke — or are you paying attention to how the player relates to staying, repeating, and not changing immediately?

Training strokes without training the mind creates weakness.
Training the mind without testing it on court creates fantasy.
