When preparing for an afternoon tennis match, getting the timing and content of your meals right is essential for ensuring optimal energy levels and performance. Your goal is to have enough fuel to play without feeling sluggish or weighed down by a heavy meal.

If Your Match is Early Afternoon

If the match is scheduled for early in the afternoon, such as around 12:00 or shortly thereafter, it’s best to skip a full lunch. Instead, opt for a small snack about 60-90 minutes before you expect to be called to the court. Some ideal options include:

  • A small apple with a piece of Parmesan cheese.

  • A small sandwich with either cooked ham, prosciutto, or bresaola.

This will provide you with enough energy without overloading your digestive system.

If Your Match is Mid-Afternoon or Later

For matches starting after 3:30 p.m., it’s important to have a proper lunch, but be mindful of the amount and type of food. The closer your meal is to the match, the lighter and more digestible it should be.

Here are some general guidelines for lunch:

  • Avoid heavy condiments or dishes that are too rich, such as:

    • Fried foods

    • Creamy sauces

    • Foods that you know from experience take a long time to digest

    • Desserts made with cream or rich fillings

  • Opt for light, easy-to-digest meals, focusing on lean proteins, simple carbohydrates, and vegetables.

By choosing foods that are easy on your stomach and avoiding those that slow digestion, you’ll be able to step onto the court feeling energized and ready to perform your best.

Proper pre-match nutrition is about timing and balance—fuel your body just enough without overwhelming it.
