How to read this article

Don’t read it looking for examples to copy.
This is not a story to imitate.
It’s a mirror to use.

In tennis, talent is talked about as if it were everything.
As if it were the real starting point.

“She was gifted.”
“He had something extra.”
“They were born that way.”

But some stories quietly dismantle this narrative.
They don’t deny talent.
They put it back in proportion.

Because they reveal a more uncomfortable truth:
it wasn’t talent. It was hunger.

Hunger is not enthusiasm

Hunger is not motivation.
It’s not emotional drive.
It’s not excitement when things are going well.

Hunger is what remains when:

  • training is repetitive

  • the body is tired

  • no one is watching

  • recognition doesn’t come

Hunger doesn’t ask how you feel.
It moves you anyway.

That’s why it’s often mistaken for talent.

Desire is not enough

Many people want to improve.
Few need to.

There is a profound difference.

Desire fades.
Need doesn’t.

When improvement is not just a goal
but an inner necessity,
everything changes: how you train, react, endure.

Not because you’re stronger.
But because escape is no longer an option.

Real hunger is quiet

It doesn’t show up in celebrations.
It doesn’t speak in motivational quotes.

Real hunger is:

  • silent

  • consistent

  • unspectacular

It shows itself in continuity.
In coming back the next day.
In staying when quitting would be easier.

That’s why it often goes unnoticed.

But not all hunger builds

This matters.

Some hunger consumes.

When it becomes:

  • obsession

  • rigidity

  • inability to stop

  • self-worth tied only to results

it stops supporting you
and starts draining you.

Understanding what kind of hunger drives you
is one of the most important mental works in tennis.

The real question is not “how talented am I?”

The real question is:

What makes me stay when it gets difficult?

If the answer is fragile,
talent won’t save you.

If the answer is clear,
talent will find its way.

🎾 Coach’s note

Talent opens doors.
Hunger decides whether you stay inside.
