Today’s story takes place in 1993. At 21 years old and ranked close to ATP No. 200, I was still playing tennis thanks to my parents’ financial support. Every time I needed a plane ticket or had a major expense, they were there to help. The only time I had earned some money, I used it to buy a car, again with their help.

I remember one day when I arrived at the gym for practice, and my coach, Marcelo Meyer, called me over for a talk. It was late January. He told me he wanted me to go to the United States to play four tournaments:

  • A Challenger

  • A very strong Challenger in Indian Wells

  • The Indian Wells Masters Qualifiers

  • The Miami Masters Qualifiers

At that time, there was no prize money for these qualifiers, and if I failed to get through, the financial loss would be enormous.

My response was firm:
“Marcelo, I don’t have the money for this. I can’t do it.”

His response was even stronger:
“But you have a car. Sell it and invest in your career. What do you need a car for? Isn’t being a tennis player more important than driving around?”

So what happened?

I went to the tournaments, without a car and with the fear of losing.

  • At Palm Springs, I lost 6-2, 6-2 in the first round against Stafford.

  • In the Indian Wells Challenger, I lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round against Stoltenberg.

  • In the Indian Wells Masters Qualifiers, I lost in the first round against Wally Masur in two sets.

  • In Miami, I lost in the first round of the qualifiers against Stolle.

I went back to the hotel devastated. No points, no money, no car.

Later, I asked Marcelo if I had made the right choice. He told me that this experience would take me to another level in both tennis and maturity. He said I needed this to understand that tennis was my only choice. That I was on the right path.

He made me see that my focus had to be solely on the court, the work, and the process.

Then, everything changed

Later that year in 1993:

✅ I won my first Challenger titles
✅ I entered multiple ATP tournaments
✅ I qualified for Roland Garros
✅ I reached the Round of 16 at the French Open
✅ I broke into the ATP Top 100 for the first time

It was the year that changed everything!

Today, after so many years, I can only thank Marcelo for showing me that success comes from giving up material things and stepping out of my comfort zone.
