What is Phytotherapy?
Phytotherapy involves the use of plants or plant-based remedies (extracts, teas, powders, etc.) to treat various ailments that we may encounter.
A Bit of History…
Over the centuries, humans have developed knowledge of plants and their healing properties. In the past, phytotherapy was the primary source of remedies for various diseases and is still widely used by millions of people today, especially where Western medicine remains partially inaccessible. Toward the end of the 19th century, with the discovery of new drugs like antibiotics, phytotherapy took a back seat.
However, many synthetic drugs, initially considered miraculous, revealed negative side effects.
This renewed interest in phytotherapy began in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the French Ministry of Health officially recognized phytotherapy as a legitimate form of medicine, granting drug status to certain plants.
It’s worth noting that over 100 important drugs originate from plants (Aspirin from White Willow, quinine from the bark of Cinchona, etc.).
Why Turn to Phytotherapy?
Plant-based medicines typically have fewer side effects, and in many cases, none at all. They don’t intoxicate our bodies and allow for true prevention of many diseases.
Natural medicine can be followed for extended periods, unlike modern medicine, which, though essential, is used in emergencies and for short-term treatment.
When chosen and used appropriately, plants can be quickly effective without overwhelming our bodies.
Use of Phytotherapy in Sports
It has been demonstrated that certain plants have beneficial effects on sports performance. The main benefits include:

Key Phytotherapeutic Plants
Devil’s Claw
The roots of this plant have well-known anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Its use in treating tendinitis is universally recognized.
Eleutherococcus
The adaptogenic properties of this plant are found in its root. It enhances the body’s resistance to exertion, facilitates recovery, and reduces damage caused by various stressors to organs and tissues. It stimulates the nervous system (increasing concentration) and has immune-boosting properties. The improvement in the body’s resistance becomes constant over time, even after the treatment ends.
Horsetail
This plant stimulates the collagen in bone tissues, promotes cartilage reconstruction during joint diseases, aids in the healing of fractures, and significantly improves tendon elasticity, protecting them during sports activities (prevention of tennis elbow).
Ginseng
The great benefits of this plant are attributed to the presence of ginsenosides, which have a tonic effect on the body, stimulate the immune system, improve physical and intellectual performance, and enhance memory and reflexes. They enable better adaptation of the body to exertion by reducing the sensation of fatigue, muscle pain, and blood lactic acid levels while increasing oxygen utilization by the muscles.
Guarana
Guarana contains much more caffeine than coffee or tea. Besides caffeine, guarana has other components that provide general stimulation of the body, improving physical and intellectual performance and generating a general sense of well-being.
Royal Jelly
This substance, secreted by worker bees, is a true nutritional and energy concentrate. Rich in B vitamins, it also contains minerals and trace elements, as well as essential amino acids and fatty acids. Royal jelly boosts energy, stimulates natural defenses, and increases the body’s resistance to fatigue, exertion, and extreme conditions like cold.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a treasure trove of nutrients: it contains 40% to 70% protein, including all essential amino acids, as well as vitamins, iron, and gamma-linolenic acid. Its composition, rich in essential elements for the body’s proper functioning, has energizing, toning, and revitalizing properties, with an anti-fatigue effect that allows athletes to endure significant physical exertion.
